Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Your spinal column should be straight when viewed from the front. However, scoliosis causes the spine to be abnormally curved to the side. This spinal condition affects millions of people world wide and is derived from the Greek word "skolios," which means"crookedness".

Here are some facts about scoliosis;

- It is diagnosed most frequently during adolescence years (during a growth spurt)
- It affects roughly 3% to 30% of the population (to a varying degree),with only 0.25% requiring treatment.
Theratio between boys and girls with small curves of 10 degrees is equal.
- Compared to boys, girls are more likelyto develop larger curves by a 5:1 ratio for curves over 20 degrees and a 10:1 ratio for curves over 30 degrees.

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis can occur due to a variety of reasons such as;

pathic: meaning, the cause is unknown with no visible pathology(most common type, around 80% - 90% of cases)
- Congenital: Due to a birth defect of a vertebral bone eg. Hemivertebra.
- Acquired:  Due to trauma, tumor, degenerative changes
- Neuromuscular: Due to a neurological disease that causes abnormalmuscular tone

As scoliosis progresses, it rarely causes pain in young individuals, and when it does, the severity does notcorrelate well with curve size.  It isusually detected when parents notice a deformity in their child’s posture, such as a high hip or shoulder, which leads to a checkup with their doctor andsubsequent diagnosis.

How is scoliosis evaluated?

Although there are different parameters, such as skeletal maturity and stage of puberty, that can influence the progression and prognosis of scoliosis. The degree of curvature itself is important.

Here are some basic guidelines based on the Cobb angle;

0 – 9 Degrees: The curve is considered very mild.
10 – 25 Degrees: This is considered mild scoliosis
26 – 40 Degrees: This is considered moderate scoliosis when bracingis considered (in youth).
40+ Degrees: This is considered severe scoliosis and may require surgery.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Each scoliosis case is evaluated on an individual basis. Once Dr.Hunter has determined which type of scoliosis you have, the treatment may consist of various techniques such as;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.
