Posture

Due to the increased use of technology that has become a part of everyday life, posture is a hot topic in health.  More and more people are becoming conscious of this issue since posture can significantly impact a person’s well-being.

Here are some interesting insights about how bad posture can influence health and well-being;

- It can generate back pain.
- It can lead to premature spinal degeneration.
- It can cause the curvatures of the cervical spine to straighten or, even worse, reverse.
- It can compress the lung, affect organ function, and influence balance and equilibrium.
- It can cause emotional distress and low self-confidence.

Is having a hunched-over posture a muscle problem?

Not always. There are many reasons people could have a rounded mid-back posture, which is also known as kyphosis.

Here are the most common causes.

Bad postural habits: During childhood, slouching, leaning back in chairs, or carrying a heavy school bag can weakenthe ligaments and muscles that support the spine, affecting a person’s posture.

Birth defect (congenital): Some people can develop a hunched posture due to having a malformed vertebra.  This starts in the womb during spinal development, and the vertebra does not form properly, resulting in a structural defect that increases the curve in the upper back.

Hereditary disease called Scheuermann’s: This disease is commonly diagnosed in adolescence and consists of abnormally wedge-shaped vertebrae involving at least three or more levels, which increase the curve in the mid back (Scheuermann's kyphosis).

Degenerative disease: having a rounded upper back can develop as a result of conditions such as arthritis, degenerative disc disease, or osteoporosis.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Well, rather than treat symptoms, which are just pain signals, resolving the underlying issue to heal naturally is key. In the case of postural issues our plan may include;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.
