Neck Pain

Neck pain has become more prevalent in recent years, especially with the increased use of technology and sedentary lifestyle. Here are some interesting stats:

- Up to 70% of people will experience a clinically important neck pain episode over the course of their lifetime.
- Neck pain is the fourth leading cause of disability, with an annual prevalence ranging from 30% to 50%, meaning that during a 12-month period, up to half the population will experience an episode of neck pain.
- Around 30% of neck pain sufferers will develop chronic symptoms, and close to 40% of individuals who experience neck pain will report persistent problems for at least 12 months.

Why does this happen?

Stress placed on the body from activities of daily living such as;

- Bad posture
- Accidents
- Repetitive movements (like tilting your head forward to look at your phone)

This can weaken the spine without causing pain. Eventually, like with any structure, when tolerance is exceeded, an injury then ensues, resulting in pain. Basically, pain appears after a problem has already developed.

What does this do to the spine?

When tissue around the spine weakens from repetitive stress or an impact, the structure as a whole may compensates with certain segments becoming restricted (kinesiopathology)

This can eventually lead to premature degeneration, irritate nervous tissue or cause other physiological changes, increasing pain and discomfort, which, if not addressed properly, may progressively get worse.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Well, rather than treat symptoms, which are just pain signals, resolving the underlying issue to heal naturally is key. In the case of neck pain our plan may include;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.
