Mid Back Pain

Pain in the mid back can be a nuisance, and when it appears, it's commonly felt between the shoulder blades. Although discomfort is this area of the spine may seem like the problemis localized there, the dorsal region is not always the root cause of the pain.

That’s because biomechanically, the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine are interrelated, meaning, the spine function as a single unit rather than in individual parts.  Actually, the thoracic (mid-back) spine serves as a support base for the cervical (neck) spine, and due to this close anatomical link, any mechanical in this region might produce changes in the cervical spine and vice versa.

Consequently, the cervical and dorsal regions heavily influence each other, which is why it's important to look at spine as a whole rather than as separate regions.

What Influences mid-back pain?

When addressing mid-back pain, it's important to take the cervical (neck) spine into account, as well as the position of the head. This is key since gravityacts on the body continuously, and both the cervical and thoracic regions absorbsthe weight of the head (average of 5kg, or 6% of your body weight) as it gets transferreddown your spine.  Therefore, improper head position(forward head posture), abnormal alignment of your cervical spine (straight orreversed cervical curve), or both can increase spinal tension, leading todifferent types of problems that can affect the mid back.

Why are more people suffering from back pain?

Mid-back pain has become more apparent in recent years, especially in young adults and teens. On average, people tend to spend around 3.5 hours (over 1,400 hours a year) a day on their cellphone, not including the hours endured sitting in front of amputer.

Just imagine what this is doing to people's spines, especially during developmental years, and the reason it's important to address the problem correctly in order to heal properly, as well as prevent further issues from developing.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Well, rather than treat symptoms, which are just pain signals, resolving the underlying issue to heal naturally is key. In the case of mid-back pain our plan may include;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.

At ChiroVitality, we use a multifaceted approach to healing. Our tailored treatment plans focus on your individual needs to ensure you receive the care you require to find lasting relief. Don’t let neck pain hold you back any longer.
