Joint Pain

When discussing joint pain, the most common cause of these types of aches and pain is osteoarthritis, also known as wear and tear arthritis. As we age, our bodies breakdown, and our joints wear out.

And although this can affect any joint in the body, it is extremely common in the spine. Spinal degeneration will affect the majority of people since 80% of people over the age of 55 have some degree of osteoarthritis.

Here are some interesting statistics:

- Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is referred to as “wear-and-tear arthritis”.

- Although it's mostly prevalent in older individuals, it can begin to appear in younger people as early as the age of 25.

- Around 50% of people over the age of 30 have some level of degenerative changes in their spine (primarily asymptomatic, meaning they have no pain).

What causesOsteoarthritis?

Well, besides being influenced by dietand genetics, excessive tension and abnormal motion play important roles in joint health.

Here's why:

- Healthy spinal movement: It facilitates the transfer of nutrients into the joints while also enabling the removal of waste products, maintaining cartilage strong and well-nourished.

Therefore, if the spine isn't moving properly and is locked up, joint health may be compromised as diminished motion decreases the transport of nutrients, leading to degenerative changes.

- Overloading the joints: Excessive tension, such as from bad posture, can negatively affect joint health, leading to premature degenerative changes.

That's because repeatedly  over-stressing a joint can cause it to break down as surrounding tissues adapt to the abnormal environment.

What happens to the joint?

Whether it be altered spinal motion, excessive physical stress, or a combination of both, joints can break down, affecting the disc and decreasing the space between two vertebrae.

This diminished space between the vertebra and the opening they create (stenosis) increases the risk of nerve compression, which can lead to pain that may shoot down your arm or leg.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Well, rather than treat symptoms, which are just pain signals, resolving the underlying issue to heal naturally is key. In the case of joint pain our plan may include;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.
