Headaches and Migraines

Headaches are very prevalent in society and affect millions of people worldwide. A headache, or cephalgia, is a pain that can occur anywhere in the region of the head or upper neck, and includes thescalp, face temples and behind the eyes.

They are so common that research shows;

- approximately90% of the population will have a significant headache at some point in their lives.
- Throughout given year over 50% of the population will suffer from headaches.
- The pain can be very debilitating. Nearly all migraine sufferers and 60% of people with tension type headaches report experiencing a reduction in social activities and work capacity.

Although headaches can indicate a serious problem causing one to worry, in the majority of cases they are benign, and are not due to any serious condition.

However, any severe headache that is accompanied by a high fever, stiff neck, altered mental awareness, or is new and that appears out of no where including “the worst headache you have ever felt”, deserves a diagnosis at the emergency room.

Are all headaches the same?

No, in general they are classed into two categories, primary and secondary.

Primary

- Headaches that are not caused by an underlying disease or structural problem.
- They account for 90% of headaches.
- Migraines and tension headaches are considered primary headaches.

Secondary

- Headaches caused by underlying problem, such as a neck injury or sinus infection, which then refers pain towards the head.
- Cervicogenic headaches (pain cause by problems in the cervical (neck) spine, account for up to 20% of all chronic headaches.
- Cervicogenic headaches are commonly associated with forward head posture, and altered (restricted) neck motion.

Howcan a problem in the spine cause a headache?

Besides neck muscle issues, like a trigger point, that can refer to pain in the head. The nerves from the upper neck region (Nerves C1, C2, C3) all send information to a cluster of nerve cells (thetrigeminalcervical nucleus) on the brain stem, which influences pain sensation for the head and neck.

Thus, irritating the nerve roots in the upper cervical (neck) spine can cause pain in the head and face, resulting in headaches.

So, how do you deal with this type of problem?

Well, rather than treat symptoms, which are just pain signals, resolving the underlying issue to heal naturally is key. In the case of headaches or migraines our plan may include;

Manipulative Therapy: This treatment can restore proper function to specific segments of the spine, allowing the structure to heal more efficiently.

Postural Education: By eliminating painful stimuli, such as those from faulty postural habits, this can reduce physical strain that is contributing to the problem.

IASTM—Soft tissue therapy: This technique promotes faster tissue regeneration, breaks down scar tissue, and reduces restrictions by engaging the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Biomechanical Rehabilitation: Practice specific routines to stabilize your spine, restore proper function and improve posture to impact the spine in a positive manner.

Kinesiotape Tape: This is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments. It lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and dermis, enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation.
